We are here to support families of AML (Acute Myeloid Leukemia) patients with their travel to afford them the opportunity to be with their loved one during their in hospital treatment.
Our Story
We are just a regular family, raised 2 beautiful girls, 4 grandkids, living the dream. Everyone is pretty healthy, we just downsized 3 years ago, life is good. Until December, 11, 2023. We got the call no parent ever wants, Mom, I’m in trouble, the doctors are telling me I have Leukemia. Not just Leukemia, but a special kind called Acute Myeloid Leukemia and I have to start Chemo right now. I will spare you the horrific details of multi organ failure and all of the pain and anguish of those 66 days but suffice it to say our pain cannot compare to what she endured. Her coma for at least a part of that time was probably a blessing. She is not the always typical result of AML, but also not a rare event either. What was very difficult for us was that we live in Homer, GA and she lived in San Antonio, Texas. So that meant travel, lots of it, and hotels, and Airbnbs. Initially for Chemo, no problem, she was doing great, then there was the changing of flights, delaying, ect, so a $500 flight turned into a $1500 flight, we were fortunate in that we had a few bucks in reserve and dug deep and were able to be there for our girl.
Our Mission
We want to ensure that every family that gets that call is able to be with them during this in hospital treatment time. The entire treatment time for Acute Myeloid Leukemia is in hospital it is anywhere from 14 days to (in our case) 66 days, possibly longer, depending on your AML family member. When I say 14 days that is for each treatment and there are a minimum of 4. As you can see, this would add up – financially.
